Q. Joan Grinzi: Why is fluoride not good for us?
A. David Getoff: Fluoride is a studied toxic chemical and is listed in toxicology journals as being a toxic chemical.
Q: Why is the American Dental association so pro fluoride?
A. Probably the main reason is that they don’t know that fluoride is harming people because they haven’t read the studies. Another reason is when an association stands for something (ex. pro fluoride) for many years, it is difficult for them to change their stand. They could get sued by people that have been harmed by fluoride (ex: people with hip fractures, cancer, etc.). They don’t want to take a chance on any of that, so they keep on saying what they have been saying for many years, even though in some respects I think they know they’re wrong.
A lot of people want information on this subject but they are not interested in putting in any time to find it. Some people will ask me why fluoride is bad. I give them several reasons and tell them to read the book, The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson. It is the best documented, well researched book on the subject. They don’t take the time to read it and with very limited knowledge tell their dentist fluoride is bad for them. Their dentist will tell them that they (and I) do not know what we are talking about and that it is ridiculous. My patient then relays back to me what the dentist has told them. I continually remind and encourage my patients to get the facts first hand and to read the book.
Christopher Bryson has looked at all the research, including what was done correctly and what was done wrong. It’s all in the book. It has the best answers to: “Why is fluoride harmful?”; “Should I be concerned about it?”, “Might it be increasing my risk for cancer?”, “Might it be increasing my risk for hip fractures?”, and “Might it be something I really need to avoid?” If you care enough about your health to want those answers, READ THE BOOK. Otherwise you are just pitting different professionals against one another and trying to decide which professional knows the facts. That book has more facts and information than any of the professionals because it was all researched over many months and finally brought together in one book. READ THE BOOK.
Another great book I recommend is The Case Against Fluoride: how Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and The Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There.
Q. Is the American Dental Association (ADA) behind getting water fluoridated?
A. The ADA would like fluoridated water because they believe and have been told and have been taught that it’s good for you. They are avoiding the research that shows them they are wrong.
Another organization that’s behind fluoridated water is the Fertilizer Industry. Fluoride is a toxic by-product of their industry. It has to be disposed of with toxic waste disposal fees paid to the US Government and Environmental Protection Agency because it is classified as a toxic waste. They, instead, would like to sell it to the public and put it in our water supply because that way they make money instead of having to pay money.
Q. So they’re the ones who are behind this?
A. I think they’re probably a large portion of it, but I think the American Dental Association, through their lack of knowledge, is also very much behind it.
Q. But the ADA isn’t instigating it?
A. No, they wouldn’t be instigating it. They’re probably pawns.
Q. So it’s the fertilizer company that’s mainly behind it?
A. That’s what we are told today. It used to be the aluminum refining industry that was the major producer of toxic fluoride waste products, but I’ve been told recently now in the last 5 years that it’s the fertilizer industry.
Q. Any other comments you’d like to make?
A. It always bothers me how many people will ask 4 different people their opinion and then try to decide who they want to believe. There’s one single book where the author spent an enormous amount of time putting the facts together so you can read it all in one book. After someone has read that book and understands what is happening, they will be able to talk intelligently to their dentist. They don’t need to guess which professional is telling them the truth. That book has pulled the facts together so well you will now be an excellent resource on the subject to your dentist and others.
Q. Out of all the water filters out there, what ones are the best in getting rid of fluoride?
A. Obviously the best thing is not to put fluoride in the water in the first place.
But the best way to remove fluoride that I am aware of right now is an activated alumina filter. Nobody has that by itself because aluminum can also come off in one of the filters so it’s used as a pre-filter to pull out all the fluoride. After the water passes through that and the fluoride has been removed (or the majority of it depending on how fast it’s flowing through), then it goes into a second filter, a good one like the Doulton (which I like). This pulls out pesticides, herbicides, and other things that might be in there (lead, etc) and any aluminum that might have leaked out of the activated alumina.
Q. Does it get the fluoride out 100%?
A. Nobody can ever use the word 100% because what is 100%? How much fluoride is coming in, how fast is the water flowing, how old is the filter? Anytime anybody ever says something is 100%, they’re not really giving you a technical answer, so it’ll depend on how fast it’s flowing through. Naturally occurring fluoride is in most water supplies, so if somebody starts with 1 part per million or 3 parts per million of fluoride and they have a filter that pulls out for example 85%, then they’ve dropped it down to a level that is unlikely to hurt them. We just want to get it down as much as we can. A good reverse osmosis (RO) filter can pull out fluoride if it’s properly operating. Somebody has to be testing it with a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter to make sure the RO is doing its job correctly. It will pull out 85%- 90% of the fluoride when it’s working correctly, but again, you need to test it to make sure it is doing that. The problem with the RO is that it also pulls out all the good minerals as well, whereas the Doulton combination with the Activated Alumina is not pulling out all the good minerals, just pulling out bad ingredients.
Q. Naturally occurring fluoride, isn’t that good for the body?
A. Not if it’s more than it should be. There are cities in the country that have to filter fluoride out of the water because it’s hurting people.
Q. What’s the normal amount of fluoride that should be in water?
A. There is no normal amount. That’s like saying what’s the normal height of an individual? There is no normal. It varies all over the place.
Q. How do you know if you’re getting a natural amount of fluoride?
A. You have to have your water tested. I just was on the phone today with a woman in Jamul, CA (San Diego County in the country side) who had to get a special filter because she had 2.1 parts per million of fluoride coming out of her well.
Q. So 2.1 parts per million is too much fluoride?
A. Absolutely.
Q. What is too much?
A. What they are trying to put in the water supply in most areas is 1 part per million. She’s already got more in her water naturally than they’re adding to water to bring it up to where they think it should be when they don’t know what they’re doing.
Q. Isn’t the natural fluoride healthier?
A. Fluoride is fluoride. It’s all the same.
Q. What’s the difference between the fluorides that is from toxic waste from the Fertilizer Industry versus the natural fluoride that comes out of a well?
A. There are different compounds of every chemical including fluoride. Fluorine is a gas on the periodic table, there is orthofluoricidic acid, there is fluoricidic acid, there is a purified form they use when they treat your teeth, there’s the toxic waste by-product form that comes from the fertilizer industry that they dump into your water. There are all sorts of different forms of fluoride. Nobody has done sufficient research to be able to prove that some of them are less bad. Fluoride is a toxic substance. The less we get the better. If the amount we get is a naturally occurring form and it’s low enough, it probably isn’t going to cause any problem. Does it have any beneficial effects in the human body? I’m not sure if they know the answer to that yet. There is a possibility that it may be helpful for bone structure but if that’s true it might be at a 20th of a part per million. It might be that as soon as it goes above that amount it’s harmful. It’s like arsenic and many other different substances out there. Some can be helpful in a tiny amount, but if you triple it, it can kill you. So is there a type of fluoride and an amount that might not be harmful? It could be, but it’s going to be way less than any amount that they’re putting in our water supply.
Q. How can I get fluoride out of my drinking water?
A. The AquaMetix® technology is one of the best water filters I have found that filters out all of the harmful elements in water and reduces excess fluoride up to 85% (depending on the Ph of the water).
