Natural Vitamin E vs. Synthetic
“Natural vitamin E supplements out perform synthetic forms, according to a
VERIS Research Summary just published. Results of recent studies suggest that natural vitamin E is more bioavailable and is retained in body tissues significantly longer than synthetic vitamin E.
These studies show that previously accepted differences were underestimated and that the bioavailability of natural vitamin E is about twice that of synthetic vitamin E compounds.”

TOWNSEND LETTER for DOCTORS & PATIENTS, JULY 1999, P. 100
Natural vitamin E is derived from vegetable oils, primarily soybean oil. Synthetic vitamin E is produced from petrochemicals. A key difference scientists are examining is the structure of the compounds. Natural vitamin E is a single stereoisomer while synthetic E is a mixture of eight stereoisomers – only one of which is the same as natural vitamin E. The other seven stereoisomers have different molecular configurations and lower biological activities.
Consumers will find natural vitamin E by looking on the product’s list of ingredients:
natural = d alpha-tocopherol
synthetic = dl alpha-tocopheryI
The researcher of a study that shows humans strongly discriminate between natural and synthetic vitamin E, believes anyone taking vitamin E should be taking the natural form. Our studies suggest without question that natural vitamin E delivers at least twice the impact as synthetic E, said Robert Acuff, PhD, Professor and Director, Center for Nutrition Research at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Acuff, author of a recent review examining more than 30 published studies on the differences between natural and synthetic forms of vitamin E, said In the case of vitamin E, the natural form is clearly the one our bodies were designed to use.
Another researcher investigating the differences between natural and synthetic vitamin E found that the natural form is 100% more bio-available than synthetic. Maret Traber; Associate Professor at the Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University, in a recently published paper (Synthetic as compared with natural vitamin B is preferentially excreted as alpha-CEHC in human urine; studies using deuterated alpha-tocopherol acetates; Maret G. Traber et al. FEBS Letters 437 (1998) 145-148), wrote that the body seems to discriminate between the two forms, favoring retention of the natural form for use within the body and excretion of the synthetic form. This finding opens a new era in the natural versus synthetic discussion.
While it has been acknowledged for some time that the body prefers natural vitamin E in terms of retention, this is the first evidence to suggest that the body preferentially excretes the synthetic form.
In Dr Traber’s study, six people were given 150 mg each of natural and synthetic vitamin E. As expected from previous studies, the researchers observed about twice the increase in plasma tocopherol concentrations following the administration of natural vitamin E as compared with the synthetic form.
More significant, however were the differences they found in analyzing urine. Almost three times as much of a degradation product of alpha-tocopherol was observed in urine following ingestion of the synthetic vitamin E. This suggests that the natural form may be preferentially bound to the tocopherol-binding protein in the liver before being secreted into the circulation, whereas the synthetic vitamin E is metabolized at a higher rate and excreted.
With numerous studies indicating that vitamin E supplements may help reduce the risks of age-related health conditions, research will continue to be published in this area.

Introduction: A Comparison of Natural and Synthetic Vitamin E
Vitamin E is the major chain-breaking antioxidant in body tissues and is considered the first line of defense against lipid perioxidation, protecting cell membranes at an early stage of free radical attack through its free radical scavenging activity. Unless scavenged by an antioxidant, highly unstable free radicals attack the polyunsaturated fatty acids of cell membranes in a chain reaction. Extensive evidence implicates free radicals in the development of a number of degenerative diseases and conditions, including coronary heart disease, cancer; Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, premature aging and cataracts.
Results of recent research suggest that vitamin B intakes that provide protection against degenerative conditions and chronic diseases may be substantially greater than amounts that prevent deficiency For example, results of a number of studies suggest that increased vitamin E intakes are associated with decreased risk of coronary head disease and certain types of cancer as well as enhancement of immune function. These increased vitamin B intakes (100 I.U. and above) are considerably above levels obtainable from diet alone, unless a very-high-fat diet is consumed, as most foods high in vitamin B are also high in fat. Most individuals who increase either intake of vitamin B to help prevent chronic diseases and maintain health choose supplements at levels that are considerably above recommended dietary allowances. Since supplements may contain either natural or synthetic vitamin E, the present VERIS Research Summary reviews the results of studies that compare the bioavailability of natural and synthetic vitamin E compounds.
WHAT FORM ARE YOU USING?
Many people are not aware that there are several different forms of vitamin E. Why does the form of vitamin E matter?
The different forms of vitamin E are not alike. Each form functions differently in the body and only one form is a true representation of vitamin E in it’s natural state. Much confusion has resulted from the researchers lack of understanding with regards to the different forms and how they function in the body.
Currently, other than UNIQUE E ®, physicians are limited to the following 3 choices [or various admixtures thereof] in dispensing or recommending Vitamin E in their practice:
1. SYNTHETIC: (dl-alpha tocopheryl) The cheapest, least effective form. The chemically produced dl-alpha-tocopher(y)l acetate or succinate (identified by the letter “l” following “d”) was originally chosen as the industry standard for research because it showed higher blood levels than the natural form (alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherols spelled with an “o” instead of a “y” to identify the natural form).
Since Vitamin E does not work at the blood level, but at the mitochondria level, this is proof positive that synthetic Vitamin E is an ineffective form. Further, diabetics usually show high blood levels of Vitamin E because their heavily sclerosed circulatory system does not permit the Vitamin E to reach the mitochondria level. Only natural form vitamin E has been discovered in brain tissue.
Synthetic Vitamin E also causes side effects including heart palpitations even at relatively low dosage.
2. ESTERIFIED: (d-alpha tocopheryl) Originally alpha-tocopherol was erroneously thought to be the only active factor of the Vitamin E Complex…(alpha, beta, delta, gamma)…so the so-called “authorities” stated that the industry could only charge for the alpha percent of the order, usually about 12% of a ton. This was obviously bad for the bottom line profit. So… The industry put it’s molecule manipulators to work and managed to convert the alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherol, into a single acid ester (from whence the term “esterified”).
Thus they could term the entire ton “d-alpha”…much better for bottom line profit. This new esterified form, d-alpha-tocopher(y)l acetate (or succinate), being highly resistant to destruction by oxidation even in the presence of minerals or at elevated temperatures, lost vitamin E’s ever important anti-oxidant function. Their own laboratory data sheets report: “Not being subject to oxidation, the tocopheryl esters do not serve as antioxidants as do the free natural tocopherols.” They destroyed the anti oxidant function of Vitamin E, but did not destroy the anti thrombic function [anti internal clotting].”
They then go on to say… “Where antioxidant (as well as antithrombic) activity is desired Mixed Tocopherols are recommended.
3. MIXED TOCOPHEROLS: (d-alpha tocopherol) The more expensive natural form, consisting of alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherol, is obtained by distillation, primarily from soy bean oil as it is most reliable. Removing the Vitamin E from the soy bean oil is like taking a marble out of a glass of water. Soy bean oil is only the carrier for the Vitamin E, and when removed you have two distinct and separate entities.
Unfortunately, in order to compete with the cheaper forms of synthetic or esterified Vitamin E, the industry as a standard leaves in 30 to 50% soy bean oil or other vegetable oil diluents in their mixture. What’s worse is the fact that this oil will turn rancid, even in hermetically sealed capsules, giving the user a shot of harmful free radicals with his vitamin E intake, thus nullifying the very benefits of taking Vitamin E.
Then there’s UNIQUE E ® …Mixed Tocopherols CONCENTRATE :
The highest quality mixed tocopherols in a concentrated formula, provides the synergistic benefits of the complete E complex (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) in addition to the highest biological activity of a truly ALL-NATURALE, devoid of soy or other oil fillers that will turn rancid. It is the natural form as occurring in nature, and as used by the body. This all-natural concentrate formula (no fillers, oils, colors, or additives) provides HIGH anti-thrombic (internal clot prevention) and HIGH anti-oxidant protection (42% Gamma per cap.), neutralizing harmful free radicals and inhibiting perioxynitrite which is very damaging to brain cells. Also, the ever important anti-thrombic factor (400IU d-alpha tocopherol) is Certified by Assay.
What’s so unique about Unique E®?
First of all, you must understand that Unique E® Vitamin E is A.C. Grace Company’s ONLY product. –since 1962
Our Unique E is a private label formula distributed ONLY by A.C. Grace. So, what sets Unique E apart from the rest of the vitamin E industry? Simply put….
1.) It’s truly ALL-NATURAL: Not the synthetic dl-alpha tocopheryl, or the esterified d-alpha tocopheryl acetate or succinate ( mistakenly called “natural”) . Not your ordinary Mixed Tocopherols.
Although many products claim to be natural, very few actually provide ALL -natural vitamin E. Amongst those that sell the Natural Mixed Tocopherols (natural vitamin E), the industry as a standard leaves anywhere between 33-50% vegetable oil (which will turn rancid) in their product. This dilutes the natural vitamin E and lowers production cost. Which in turn enables the producers of so-called “all-natural” vitamin E to compete with the cheaper synthetic and esterified forms.
Unique E provides 100% all-natural vitamin E. How can you be sure. . . .
2.) It’s a CONCENTRATE formula: Concentrate means that there is nothing else in our product besides pure natural vitamin E. There are no oil fillers, additives, colors, or flavors. A.C. Grace pays 275% more than the average vitamin E to ensure that there is no soy or any other vegetable oil left in the product. There have been many people that have said “I can’t take vitamin E, it makes me sick.” Yet they can take Unique E, no problem. Why? Because it’s not the vitamin E that makes people sick, it’s the rancid oil diluent (veg. oil or additive) that is in the vitamin E that makes most people sick. We have also had people who are highly allergic to soy (most E is derived from soy, including Unique E) tell us that the only vitamin E they can take with out becoming ill is our Unique E .
3.) It has produced RESULTS: Through out the many years that A.C. Grace has distributed Unique E directly to Doctors and Health Professionals there have been consistent reports of Doctors getting amazing results using Unique E. Most people are unaware of all the wonderful benefits of this truly unique vitamin. Why? Because the 2 most important factors of vitamin E are form and dose.
What form are you using? Are you taking the right dose? Most of our physicians using the maximum jump start dose of one 400IU capsule for each 40 pounds of body weight report the following results:
SEVERE ANGINA : Pain relief often within the first few doses.
FIBROCYSTIC BREAST TUMORS: Usually disappear within 10-14 days.
PAINFUL LEG CRAMPS: Relief within the first week or two.
SCAR TISSUE: Dissolved from prior surgery or heart attack, usually within 6 months to a year and a half. New EKG will indicate no evidence of previous scar tissue or heart attack.
DIABETICS: Insulin dosage often can be reduced.
PERIPHERAL CIRCULATION: Considerably improved.
These are just a few of the benefits that are testified to by our physicians and health professionals with extensive experience in the use of UNIQUE E ®
4.) It is an EXCLUSIVE FORMULA: Unique E is a private label formula that is produced exclusively for A.C. Grace Company. The highest quality Natural Mixed Tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherols) have been formulated to deliver maximum potency while staying true to nature. Our one-of-a-kind specialized formula provides: EXTRA-HIGH Anti-Oxidant protection with Gamma Tocopherol being 42% of each capsule. HIGH Anti-thrombic (anti-clotting) protection with 400I.U. d-alpha tocopherol per cap . Read more about How Tocotrienols Support Heart Health and how to receive the MAXIMUM SYNERGISTIC BENEFITS of the complete natural complex as found in nature. Each tocopherol has distinct and separate beneficial properties yet can not perform correctly outside of the complete natural complex as the tocopherols work together synergistically as a whole. Unique E provides the highest biological activity of a concentrate formula plus the synergistic benefits of the complete Natural Vitamin E COMPLEX!
The bottom line is…. If you are using any other form of Vitamin E in your practice, you, or your patients will never experience ALL the benefits until you try UNIQUE E ® !
UNIQUE E® VITAMIN E Complex
(d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, d-delta tocopherols)
The most commonly asked question… Why does your doctor or health professional recommend you use only UNIQUE E® Vitamin E Complex when you can buy so many other Vitamin E products for less from supermarket shelves or mail order catalogs?
You have a very slim or no chance of finding a truly protective, effective form of Vitamin E in the market place!
Doctors practicing Complementary, Alternative, Integrative medicine and health-care professionals also know there are only THREE primary forms of Vitamin E available ( other than UNIQUE E® Vitamin E Complex).
1. Synthetic: dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate (or succinate spelled with “y” instead of ” o” as in tocopherol). Is the cheapest, least effective, (often dry) form chemically produced. It often causes unwanted side effects such as, gastric distress, palpitations, even at relatively low dosages. Persons taking dry succinate Vitamin E err in assuming this form of Vitamin E is better because it contains no rancid vegetable oil content to sicken them. Many shelf and catalog available Vitamin E products are adulterated with addition of the synthetic dl form to lower their competitive shelf cost.
2. Esterified: d-alpha tocopheryl acetate or succinate (also spelled with “y” instead of “o” as in tocopherol). Produced by chemically converting the natural oil soluble alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherols, into a single acid ester (whence the term ” esterified”). The Laboratory Data Sheets of producers of esterifed Vitamin E admit the tocopher(y)l esters not being subject to oxidation do not serve as antioxidants. Where antioxidant protection as well as full ANTITHROMBIC biological activity is desired, they recommend Mixed Tocopherols Concentrate.
3. Mixed Tocopherols: The natural and most expensive form of Vitamin E Complex containing all four of the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta oil soluble tocopherols.
Unfortunately, producers of natural Vitamin E Complex Mixed Tocopherols do not produce any without leaving up to a third or half of soy or other oil diluent in the mixture, which will turn rancid, even in hermetically sealed gel capsules, and produce a jolt of harmful free radicals along with daily Vitamin E intake. This nullifies your very reason for taking Vitamin E Complex for antioxidant protection!
Each soft easy-to-swallow gel capsule provides Unique e® Vitamin E Complex: All Natural Unesterified Vitamin E Complex Concentrate is the only form providing full ANTITHROMBIC ( internal clot prevention) as well as full ANTIOXIDANT (protection against harmful free radicals). Recent studies reveal the gamma tocopherol fraction is more potent than alpha tocopherol or the other beta and delta tocopherols in suppressing harmful free radicals. Gamma tocopherol inhibits peroxynitrates, harmful to brain cells because of its powerful oxidizing and nitrating properties. Vitamin E supplements should contain at least 20% gamma tocopherol, but most commercial Vitamin E supplements do not contain any gamma tocopherol at all. Unique E® Vitamin E Complex has always contained at least 36% gamma tocopherol. Our UNIQUE E® formula contains a minimum of 400 I.U. D-ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL the important ANTITHROMBIC factor, plus the antioxidant function d-beta, d-gamma, d-delta tocopherols.
Q & A:
Q. What UNIQUE E® dosage should you take?
A. You will never really know all the benefits the right form of Vitamin E Complex Concentrate will provide unless you use UNIQUE E® the right form and especially in the right dosage as recommended! Our doctors and health professionals with extensive Unique E® dosage experience have found it takes a minimum dosage of one soft gelatin capsule for each 40 pounds of body weight for normal maintenance, with the entire dosage all taken at the same time. (If over age 50, it would be prudent to take one extra capsule daily).
Many physicians with long experience with UNIQUE E® use a “jumpstart” maximum dosage of six Vegetable Gel capsules for quicker alleviation of chronic conditions, with the entire dosage all taken at the same time. Your doctor knows when the maximum dosage is advisable. When chronic symptoms are alleviated regular maintenance dosage based on body weight and age can be resumed. It is always advisable to follow your doctors directions in taking any vitamin or other supplement. There is no danger of overdose with UNIQUE E® even with sustained maximum dosage.
Q. How long should you continue taking UNIQUE E® Vitamin E?
A. The Drs. Evan and Wilfred Shute, eminent Canadian specialists (now deceased), who successfully treated over 54,000 cases of heart conditions, stated that Vitamin E is an unusual “all or nothing substance” in that half a dose does not produce half a result. You need to take enough to “spill over” the top of the dam. What spills over the top produces the results. They stated there are 3 ways to make Vitamin E useless. (1) Don’t take high enough dosage to get “spill over” results. (2) Split the dose so you never get to the top of the dam. (3) Use the wrong form.
Unlike the other oil soluble vitamins A, D, and K, Vitamin E contrary to general belief is not stored in the body. In as little as 3 to 5 days after discontinuing daily dosage, none is present in the blood stream and all preventive and protective benefits cease.
According to nutritional authorities, the average American diet, currently provides only 7-10 I.U. of Vitamin E daily, an amount far too insignificant for any preventive or protective effect. For this reason the need for you to take Vitamin E continues as long as you desire its protective benefits. In insurance, you cease coverage protection when you cease payments regardless of how long you previously paid premiums.
Q. Can Vitamin E make you feel sick?
A. People say “I can’t take Vitamin E because it makes me sick!” Well, first of all, it’s not the Vitamin E that makes them sick! It’s the rancid vegetable oil in the capsules!
This is why some mistakenly believe the dry acetate (or succinate) form is better than the natural oily form Vitamin E because the dry form contains no rancid oil to cause nausea. If you are taking the synthetic dl type, you aren’t taking a natural substance. You are actually taking a synthetic chemically produced Vitamin E. When you take even low or normal dosages of the synthetic dl (or esterified) acetate or succinate forms, you may experience palpitations, gastric distress and other unwanted side effects even on relatively low dosages. This will not occur when taking the all natural unesterified high antithrombic high antioxidant form of Vitamin E Complex Mixed Tocopherols.
Q. Why is your doctor’s choice of UNIQUE E® Vitamin E Complex best for you?
A. Your doctor prefers prevention rather than treatment for disease. Prevention is less invasive and costly for you. Your doctor is interested in you, the whole patient. He knows the supplements you take either contribute to or detract from your total health. Many doctors and health professionals provide UNIQUE E® Vitamin E Complex Mixed Tocopherols Concentrate direct to you as a convenient valuable service. They know regular daily intake will provide benefits available only from the truly effective and reliable UNIQUE E® Vitamin E Complex.
David Getoff, CCN, CTN, FAAIM, recommends to his students in his classes to take 1 capsule per 60 to 80 lbs. of body weight taken all together at the meal of your choice. It is always best to consult with your Healthcare Practitioner.
